A high-demand diploma
One and two-year diplomas and advanced diplomas at DLI-approved colleges, in the fields Canada is actually short of — health and social services, the trades, tech.
The practical qualification, and the one most people mean when they say they want to do this properly.
A bachelor’s or master’s
Full degrees at DLI-approved institutions. The longest route and the heaviest, and the one that changes the most about what comes after it.
A master’s of 16 months or longer is also the level at which IRCC’s spousal open work permit rules become relevant — see below.
A full-time programme means a study permit, and whether you can apply for one from inside Canada depends on the status you hold now. We work that out with you before anything else.
Nobody studies here for the sake of it
You are weighing time and money against where you want to be. So here is what is actually true, and where we stop.

It is the reason most people ask, so we will not pretend otherwise. For 2026 Canada is running Express Entry invitation rounds under named categories — health care and social services, trades, STEM, strong French, and new ones for doctors, researchers and transport occupations. The minimum work experience for the renewed categories went up from six months to one year.
That is why the fields above are the fields above. What we will not do is tell you a particular programme gets you there — nobody honest can, and under Canadian law that assessment belongs to an authorised professional. Anyone promising a PR pathway off a web page is selling you something.

Care work in homes, retirement residences and community settings.
Canada's Job Bank rates health care aides at a strong risk of labour shortage nationally through 2033 — a field where the shortage is the official forecast, not a sales line.

Early Childhood Educator Assistant
Work alongside qualified educators in childcare and early-learning settings.
Job Bank rates the outlook good in British Columbia through 2026, with the province still opening childcare spaces under its $10-a-day programme. Saskatchewan is rated good too.
Worth knowing: Certification is provincial. In BC you must be certified by the ECE Registry to work in a licensed facility, and a private course is not automatically recognised.
Pharmacy Assistant
Support pharmacists with dispensing, inventory and customer service in retail and hospital pharmacy.
A way into a pharmacy team without the years a regulated qualification takes, and a common first step for people who go on to train further.
Worth knowing: A Pharmacy Assistant is not a Pharmacy Technician. In Ontario that title is restricted and needs registration with the Ontario College of Pharmacists. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.
French
Build Canada's second official language.
French opens roles across the federal public service, bilingual customer-facing work and the whole Francophone employment market — well beyond Quebec.
Worth knowing: A language course is not an occupational licence, and a French-as-a-second-language programme is not itself PGWP-eligible.

Will this help my permanent residency?
Canada's federal system looks at things like Canadian study, Canadian skilled work experience, language ability and occupation — that is public and published. Whether a particular course moves you toward PR is an individual assessment, and under Canadian law only an authorised professional may make it. We will introduce you to one, at no cost. Anyone promising you a PR pathway off a web page is selling you something.
Can my spouse work if I study full-time?
Since 21 January 2025 IRCC restricts spousal open work permits to spouses of students in a master's of 16 months or longer, a doctoral programme, or a specific list of professional degrees. A regular bachelor's, a college diploma and a graduate certificate are not on that list. That is the general published rule — whether it applies to your family is an individual assessment, and we bring in an authorised professional rather than answering it ourselves.
Do you only do short courses?
No. We place students into one and two-year diplomas and advanced diplomas, and into full bachelor's and master's degrees, at DLI-approved institutions. The short courses are the fastest route, not the only one — and for a lot of people they are the wrong one.

Is a short course or a full-time college programme better for me?
Genuinely depends on what you hold now, how long you have on it, and what you want in three years. A short course gets you working sooner; a full-time DLI programme is the longer, heavier route with a different set of consequences. We will lay both out against your actual situation — and where the answer turns on immigration rules, we bring in someone authorised rather than guessing.
Do I need a study permit for a short course?
IRCC's published position is that you do not need a study permit for a programme of six months or less — but whether that applies to you depends on the status you hold right now and how long you are authorised to stay. We check that with you before you commit to anything, and where the answer is not clear we put you in front of an authorised professional rather than guessing.
Can I do a full-time college programme instead?
Yes. We place students into DLI-approved colleges as well as the short courses. A full-time programme means a study permit, and whether you can apply for one from inside Canada depends on the status you hold now — that is the first thing we work out with you.
What does it cost?
It depends on the college, the programme and the intake, and there are usually offers running. Ask us and you get today's real number for the exact programme you are looking at, not a range off a web page.

What do I pay UniStep?
No recruitment or placement fee — finding a programme, being matched and applying through us is free to you. You pay the college's tuition and any government or third-party costs directly, and if you enrol we may receive a commission from the institution. One thing is separate: if you ask us to have your visa file handled by a licensed immigration professional, that is their service and they charge for it. You will be told the fee and who is doing the work, in writing, before anything starts — and you are never obliged to use someone we introduce.
Can I study while I am working?
Several of these run online, which is why students on a work permit choose them. Ask us which are running online for your intake.
Do you give immigration advice?
No. We are an education recruitment partner: we place students into programmes at colleges we hold agreements with. Under Canadian law, personalised immigration advice may only be given by an authorised professional — a Canadian lawyer, a Quebec notary, or a member of the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants. Anything about your permit, your status or your eligibility goes to one of them.
I already used my post-graduation work permit. Does that change things?
It can change what is worth doing next, and it is one of the first things we ask. A PGWP is once per lifetime — a new study permit for a bachelor's or a master's does not reset it. We will be straight with you about what is and is not still open.
